Why cybersecurity needs multi-modal AI detection

Generative AI has made it easy to fake a face, clone a voice or create a script that convinces. Attackers rarely fake everything. They mix real and AI content because hybrid content is harder to spot. A real person on a video call can read answers written by AI. Real footage can carry a cloned voice. A deepfake face can be used by a real speaker.

Tools that check only one modality miss these attacks. A deepfake video detector that isn’t looking for anything else will see a real face if it’s genuine but miss the cloned voice. A voice checker hears a real voice and passes through a recording but the content could be assisted with AI. AI Aware is multi-modal. It checks every layer of the same content, so you can see which parts are fake.

Attackers mix real and AI content

RealAI

A real person reading AI answers

VideoVoiceWords

A caller or interview candidate reads replies from an AI tool on a phone in their lap. The face and voice are genuine, so video checks pass it. AI Aware turns the speech into text and checks the words.

Real video, AI voice

VideoVoice

Genuine footage with a cloned or synthetic voice inserted, so a real person appears to say something they never said.

AI video, real voice

VideoVoice

A deepfake face driven by a real person speaking, used to impersonate an executive or get through an identity check.

Fully synthetic

VideoVoiceWords

Deepfake video, a cloned voice and an AI-written script, combined into one convincing message.

Cloned voice calls

VoiceWords

A familiar voice on the phone asking for a payment, a password reset or access to a system.

Hybrid images and documents

PhotoEditsText

Real photos with AI edits, and documents that mix human and AI writing. AI Aware shows which parts were flagged.

How multi-modal detection works

Each layer of the content is checked by its own detector.

Video frames

Video is broken into frames, and each frame is checked for facial inconsistencies, unnatural blinking, lighting artefacts and changes between frames that point to AI manipulation.

Voice

The audio is checked for signs of a cloned or synthetic voice, including speech patterns, prosody, background noise and spectral characteristics.

Words spoken

Speech is converted to text, and the transcript is checked by the AI text detector. This catches a real person reading words written by AI, which video and voice checks cannot see.

Images and documents

Images are checked for pixel-level artefacts, repeated textures and metadata inconsistencies. Documents are checked passage by passage, so mixed human and AI writing is highlighted.

One clear result

Each layer is reported together, so you see which part of the content is real and which is AI.

Where it helps

For security, fraud and trust teams.

  • Remote hiring and video interviewsCandidates can read AI answers from a phone or second screen, or use a deepfake face to hide who they are. Check the interview recording for the face, the voice and the answers.
  • Executive impersonation and payment fraudAttackers use cloned voices and deepfake video of senior staff to ask for urgent transfers. Check the call or video before money moves.
  • Help desk and password resetsA cloned voice can pass voice checks and ask for a password reset or a new device. Check the recording before access is given.
  • Identity verificationDeepfake faces and AI-edited ID photos are used to open accounts and pass checks. Check the selfie video and the document images.
  • Phishing and social engineeringAI writes convincing emails and voice notes at scale. Check suspicious messages, voice notes and attachments.
  • Disinformation and brand attacksFake video or audio of your leaders can spread fast. Verify it before you respond. Read how AI Aware confirmed Russian disinformation.

Why AI Aware

Detection built for how attacks really work.

  • Built for hybrid contentDesigned for content from AI generators it has not seen before, and for mixed content that simpler tools fail on.
  • Many models, kept currentAn ensemble of detection models, updated with agentic AI as generators change.
  • Clear resultsA confidence score with flagged parts highlighted, not just a yes or no.
  • Proven accuracyOver 97% on text, images, video and audio, with the method published.
  • Research-ledA UK company funded by Innovate UK, working with City St George’s, University of London.

How it works

  1. Upload or pasteAdd a video, an audio file, an image or text.
  2. AI Aware checks every layerVideo frames, the voice and the words spoken are each analysed.
  3. See clear resultsA confidence score, with flagged passages and media highlighted.

Frequently asked questions

What is multi-modal deepfake detection?

It means checking every part of a piece of content, such as the video, the voice, the words spoken, images and text, rather than just each modality. Attackers mix real and AI content, so a single check can miss AI generated content if it is not looking for the right type.

Can AI Aware detect someone reading AI-generated answers in an interview?

Yes. Speech in the recording is converted to text, and the transcript is checked by the AI text detector. AI-written answers are flagged even when the face and voice are real.

Can AI Aware detect a cloned voice?

Yes. The audio detector checks speech patterns, prosody, background noise and spectral characteristics for signs of a cloned or synthetic voice.

Can it detect a deepfake face with a real voice?

Yes. Video frames are checked separately from the audio, so a deepfake face is flagged even when the voice is genuine.

Can AI Aware detect deepfakes live?

Yes. Live detection and multi-modal checks are available by API or as a custom implementation. Contact us to discuss your needs.

How accurate is AI Aware?

99.4% for video and images, 97.6% for audio and 98.6% for text. See how we measure accuracy.
